Logbook Service vs Major Service vs Minor Service: What's the Difference?

Quick answer: A "logbook service" is just a service that follows the manufacturer\'s schedule and gets the logbook stamped. "Minor" and "major" are terms describing how much work is done - and they should match what\'s listed in your logbook for that specific km/age interval.

Understanding the Terms

Logbook Service

Any service that follows your car\'s official service schedule. The logbook (or digital service record for newer cars) specifies what needs doing at each interval - and a logbook service does exactly that. The key outcome: your warranty stays valid.

Minor Service / Interim Service

Typically done at 10,000 km or 6 months. Covers the basics:

  • Engine oil and filter change
  • Fluid level check and top-up (brake, coolant, power steering, washer)
  • Brake inspection
  • Tyre pressure and tread check
  • Basic 20-point inspection
  • Reset service reminder

Major Service / Full Service

Usually at 40,000-60,000 km intervals. Includes everything in a minor service plus:

  • Air filter replacement
  • Cabin filter replacement
  • Spark plugs (if due)
  • Fuel filter (some vehicles)
  • Full brake inspection
  • Comprehensive 40-point check
  • Possibly transmission fluid, coolant flush depending on schedule

Intermediate Service

Some manufacturers have a middle tier - everything in minor plus brake fluid, a more thorough inspection, etc. Often at 30,000 km or 60,000 km.

What Should Each Cost in Perth?

Approximate ranges for common cars (Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai, Honda):

  • Minor service: $180-$280
  • Intermediate service: $280-$450
  • Major service: $380-$700

European cars (VW, BMW, Mercedes, Audi) cost 40-70% more due to parts prices and more complex procedures.

Luxury and performance cars (Porsche, high-end Mercedes, BMW M-series) can easily double the standard prices.

How Often Should You Service?

Whichever comes first:

  • Manufacturer\'s km interval (usually 10,000-15,000 km)
  • Time interval (usually 12 months)

Time matters because oils degrade chemically over time, not just use. A car that does 5,000 km/year still needs annual servicing.

The "Severe Service" Schedule Most Dealers Don\'t Mention

Every car manual has two schedules: normal and severe. Severe applies if you:

  • Do lots of short trips (under 10km each way)
  • Drive in stop-start city traffic frequently
  • Drive in extreme temperatures (Perth 40°C summers qualify)
  • Drive on dusty or unsealed roads
  • Tow trailers

Severe schedule typically halves the interval. Most Perth drivers fit the severe profile, so a 10,000 km/12 month cycle is more realistic than 15,000 km/12 month.

What to Look for on Your Service Invoice

A good invoice lists:

  • Specific oil type (e.g. "5W-30 Castrol EDGE")
  • Filter part numbers
  • Any measurements taken (brake pad thickness, fluid condition)
  • Anything found that needs attention
  • Mileage
  • Next service due date and km

If an invoice just says "minor service - $220", ask for a detailed breakdown. It\'s your right, and reputable mechanics welcome the question.

Common Upsells - Which Are Real?

  • "Transmission flush recommended" - check the schedule. Many modern transmissions are "fill for life." Some do need 100,000 km changes. Not every time you\'re there.
  • "Fuel system cleaner" - rarely needed. Skip.
  • "Engine flush" - controversial. Some manufacturers warn against it. Usually not necessary.
  • "Coolant flush" - legitimate, every 2-4 years depending on manufacturer.
  • "Brake fluid flush" - legitimate, every 2 years. Brake fluid absorbs moisture and degrades performance.
  • "Differential oil change" - legitimate at the interval (usually 100,000 km) for AWD/4WD.

Your logbook is the reference. If a recommended service isn\'t in there, ask why it\'s needed.
